The Impact of Technology on Women in Higher Education in Pakistan
This study is an analysis of the influence of technology for higher education of the women of Pakistan in various institutions of higher education. To better understand the influence of technology, a detailed overview of the history of higher education, as it relates to women, as well as other pertinent aspects related including curriculum, assessment, professional and financial support clarifies the connection between women’s performance in tertiary education in Pakistan and technology. This also includes an analysis of the educational pipeline connecting the elementary and high schools to institutions of higher education since most of the current research related to gender issues in Pakistan has focused on the elementary level. A discussion of the inequities in the education of women in higher education after the inclusion of technology in education investigates whether in Pakistan this development has made any change in the education of women. The argument being that women as agents of change in their lives will be greater proponents for the education of girls at the elementary level. Greater success of women in higher education will encourage change on all levels. In this participatory research, the women who engaged in dialogue reflected on how their experiences might facilitate education and empowerment of female students from primary through tertiary education. This study, therefore, attempts to answer the following questions: To what extent are the women of Pakistan benefiting from the introduction of technology in higher education, or is it creating a greater divide? How can the introduction of technology increase the human and social capital of the women in Pakistan or will it slow it down even further?
